March 22rd, 2005 Assignment

Hello Students:

We had a really exciting class this week, and I am thankful that we had such impressive attendance. During our discussion today, we discussed the importance of THEORY in conducting research and attempted to come up with good working definitions of this term. During our discussions, the following words came into play:

• cluster
• main idea
• ramifications
• idiolect
• derive
• suggests/states/maintains/ascertains/supports the notion that...

HOMEWORK

1. Spend at least 30 minutes looking at sentences 1-6 on "BE YOUR OWN WOMAN"
2. Conduct an extensive CLUSTERING session with yourself and try to find out exactly, precisely, definitely what it is that you might be doing in the near future. As you cluster, take a break here and there and try to get a "metacognitive" view or picture of what you see going on before you as you work.
3. After you have completed your clustering, find an article that contains THEORETICAL aspects related to it. In other words, try to locate something that is similar to your interests and your academic direction.
4. CIRCLE all of the verbs in the text and make a list of 50 verbs and post them on the class blog as a comment and print them out on paper. We will be discussing this list of verbs in order of strength and certainty.
